ACTIVITY 1: GOING ON AN ACORN HUNT Once you have identified your acorn collection site, you can prepare to collect your seed population. Your collected population will support and relate to any additional activities that you choose. Use the attached D.N.R. letter to identify your who, what, when, where, and why. ACORN COLLECTION TIPS - Gather seed needed by the nursery.
- Select and identify quality trees.
- Don't mix your seed. Scotch taping specific seed types or making a necklace is a good way to monitor specific seed collection.
- Identify seed potential near or at your school. If you need a site, call the D.N.R. for help. Acorn and seed picking is best on site.
- Grocery store bags, milk jugs with a larger opening cut, or black 2 gallon nursery pots are among some good ideas for collecting containers.
- Organize picking groups and assign a team leader.
- Quality control is important. Look for old seed, cracks, holes, or deformities. Use these for squirrel or deer food.
- Check for poison ivy, broken glass or any other potential hazards in your collection area
- Prepare and discuss rules, guidelines and outcomes in advance.
