Community Projects

The strong commitment of the Forest Conservancy District Board for Baltimore County to developing neighborhood involvement in the growth of trees and forests is evident in their involvement in a variety of local projects.

One such project, Coastweeks, cosponsored with the Back River Neck Peninsula Community Association, is an environmental awareness and educational program set up to encourage citizens to participate in the conservation of our renewable natural resources: our coastal marshes, rivers, beaches, wildlife and our productive forests.

The Maryland Forest Service and our forestry board support the Greening Committees as a commitment to the concept of developing and preserving urban forests. A variety of services are provided to assist in this effort by instructing community groups in how to form Greening Committees, assisting in the development of shade trees commissions, designing street tree planting plans, and offering other types of technical assistance.

Each fall from mid September through October the Maryland DNR Forest Service collects seeds from various tree species to supply for planting at the state nursery. Students will assist the DNR Forest Service and the Forest Conservancy District Board in identifying collection sites, making appropriate contacts with tree owners, collecting and bagging seed.

Forested buffers planted along a stream or river can play a key role in long term stewardship. Managing trees and forests can help protect the watershed. Foresters from the Maryland Forest Service are available throughout the state to provide technical assistance to landowners who are interested in managing their forest lands and planting forested buffers.
