Seed Collection

Volunteers Needed

What:

The Annual Seed/Acorn Collection Effort for the State Forest Tree Nursery

Where:

Approved sites for collecting seeds/acorns are available throughout Baltimore County,   (you may know of some)

When:

When the trees shed their seeds/acorns, usually the end of September through October

Each fall from mid September through October, the Maryland DNR Forest Service collects seeds from various tree species to supply for planting at the state nursery. The state tree nursery needs seed and acorns for planting each year in order to supply the growing number of seedlings that are required for planting new forests and buffer plantings that will help improve the quality of the Bay. Students will assist the DNR Forest Service and the Forest Conservancy District Board in identifying collection sites, making appropriate contacts with tree owners, collecting and bagging the seed. On-site instruction will be provided by the DNR Forest Service.

Student  service learning credit will be available.
