Focus on Education

The Baltimore County Forestry has maintained a strong focus on education. Providing the necessary link between the needs of the education community in Baltimore County and the environmental education resources of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources the Forestry Board designs and implements, valuable programs aimed at the education of Baltimore County students.

In an attempt to address the staff development needs in the area of environmental education the education committee and the regional education specialist for the Forest Service have designed two courses to assist Baltimore County teachers with the resources, materials and training needed to implement various areas of the Essential Curriculum.

The Schoolyard Reforestation Program provides teachers of Baltimore County schools with the guidance and planning materials necessary to develop environmental planting projects. The guide developed by the Forestry Board's Education Committee provides an excellent resource for students and teachers who are developing plans for their own unique situations.

Camp Hickory, a program designed by the Department of Natural Resources to provide hands on experiences for high school students interested in exploring the possibilities of careers in forestry and related fields, is supported annually by the Forestry Board. Two local high school students are sponsored by the board to attend this excellent program.
