INTRODUCTION

This handbook has been developed by the Maryland Forest Conservancy District Board for Baltimore County (Forestry Board) and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources - Forest Service - Baltimore/Carroll Project (Forest Service) in cooperation with the Baltimore County Public Schools and the Soil Conservation Service for teachers and community leaders who are interested in planning and implementing conservation projects. The focus of this handbook is the facilitation of site usage planning and the execution of various tree planting projects. Related projects are described and the appropriate contact person/office for technical assistance has been provided within this manual.

This handbook will be presented on the Baltimore County Forestry Website in eight  segments. An additional segment will be added each month. It is hoped that this handbook will be useful for educators developing schoolyard reforestation projects. While this handbook was developed for use in Baltimore County, Maryland, many of the suggestions and guidelines are universal.

Using the handbook as a guide, the project leader will be able to advise a school or community in developing a long range site plan. A flow chart, a list of contact persons, and related sample projects are included in this handbook.

The handbook addresses the following procedures:

Investigating the site

Determining and prioritizing goals

Identifying special considerations

Developing the site plan

Implementing the plan

The addendum includes blank forms to assist in the planning and organization process, sample projects and site plans. The latter two are working models which can be used by project leaders for ideas, peer assistance and possible field trips. Project leaders are encouraged to contact others involved in school and community habitat projects. The Forestry Board can provide a list of contact persons upon request.

This program provides a hands-on, problem solving activity for students to research, plan, develop, implement, maintain, apply for grants and provide follow-up by developing a Forest Stewardship Plan, keeping data, and writing final reports. Please use the blank pages in the handbook for your personal notes.
