Focus on Trees and Forests

Special Notes:     Focus on Trees and Forests is sponsored by the Maryland DNR Forest Service, the Baltimore County Forest Conservancy District Board and the Baltimore County Public Schools Office of Science. In this 30 hour course, participants will explore the forest ecosystem within an historical context of the forests of Maryland and a technical context by examining soils, forest structure, tree and plant physiology and tree identification, the forest as habitat for wildlife, and the management of the forest and learn to use the tools of the forester. A field tour will be conducted on the final day of class. Participants will receive resource materials.

Graduate Credit Requirements: Complete the requirements for the inservice credit and construct a performance assessment utilizing materials and information obtained in the course.

Course Objectives:

· Participants will develop an awareness and understanding of the forests of Maryland and the United States

· Participants will explore the forest ecosystem within a technical context by examining geology, forest soils, forest structure, tree and plant physiology, tree identification, forest ecology and the forest as habitat for wildlife

· Participants will apply this technical experience to the Essential Curriculum and incorporate the course resources into classroom planning

· Participants will be introduced to the primary wood processing industry and explore the economic impact of the wood industry
