Pignut Hickory -- Carya glabra

Bark:

The gray bark becomes furrowed with forking ridges.

Flowers: 

Male, slender drooping catkins. Female, 2-10 flowers at tip of same twig.

Fruit:

Slightly pear shape or rounded, about 1 1/2 inches long, Thin husk.

Leaves:

5  sharp pointed lanceolate leaflets , 8- 12 inches long, finely toothed. 

Tree Size:

Height: 50-75 feet, Width: 3 - 4 feet.

        

Silver Maple -- Acer saccharinum

Bark: 

Young trees gray and smooth, old trunks furrowed and separating into large scales.

Flowers:

1/4 inch long reddish buds turning greenish yellow, male and female in separate clusters.

Fruit:

1 1/2 - 2 1/2 inch long broad winged seed.

Leaves: 

Leaves are opposite, with five lobes, each sharply tooth.

Tree Size:

Height: Attaining 100 feet or more, Width: 3 - 4 feet.

 

Sycamore -- Platanus occidentalis

Bark:    Grayish-brown outer bark, flakes off exposing the whitish underneath layer giving the sycamore its characteristic mottled multi-colored appearance.
Flowers: Tiny green  roundish drooping clusters.
Fruit: One inch brown sphere, hanging on stalk, ripens to disperse small elongated seeds in winter.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, broadly ovate with 3 to 5 shallow broad short pointed lobes.
Tree Size:  Height: Attaining 100 feet or more, Width: 10 feet or more.

 

Sweetbay -- Magnolia virginiana

Bark: Gray and smooth.
Flowers: Are completely white and fragrant, 2 to 3 inches broad.
Fruit: 1 1/2 - 2" long conelike, composed of many separate dark red fruit.
Leaves: Leaves are oblong to elliptical shaped, 4" to 6" long and 1-3" wide. Shiny bright green on top and pale or whitish underneath.
Tree Size: Height: Attaining 20 to 30 feet, Width: 1 to 1 1/2 feet. 

 

Sweetgum -- Liquidambar styraciflua

Bark:    Gray, becoming deeply furrowed.
Flowers: Male and female, greenish ball-like clusters.
Fruit: Brown ball 1 inch or more in diameter composed of many individual fruits, each ending in curved prickly points.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, star shaped with 5 sometimes 7 long pointed saw-tooth lobes.
Tree Size:  Height: 60-100 feet, Width 1 1/2 - 3 feet.

 

Willow Oak -- Quercus phellos

Bark: Deeply furrowed and blackish.
Flowers: Drooping catkins, yellow-green in color.
Fruit: Round acorns about 1/2 " long with a scaly cup.
Leaves: Leaves are 2-5 inches long, smooth-edged, narrow with bristle tips.
Tree Size:  Height: 80-100 feet, Width to 3 feet.

 

Yellow Poplar -- Liriodendron tulipifera

Bark: Light gray to brown, becomes fissured with age.
Flowers: Tulip-like 1 1/2 - 2 inches across, with yellowish-green petals and reddish-orange bands near their base.
Fruit: Cone like and Light brown , 2 1/2 - 3 inches long that breaks up when  matures.
Leaves: Distinctive shape, Composed of four large lobes, leaves are about as long as broad.
Tree Size:   Height: Attaining 100 feet or more, Width: 3 - 4 feet.
