Forestry Incentive Program

General Description

The Forestry Incentive Program (FIP) supports forest maintenance and reforestation activities for numerous natural resource benefits, including reduced wind and soil erosion and enhanced water quality and wildlife habitat, as well as, helping to assure future timber supplies. FIP is administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources - Forest Service.

Funding & Assistance Availability

To be eligible, landowner must own between ten and 1,000 acres of eligible forest land; be a private landowner of a nonindustrial forest; have land that is suitable for conversion from cropland into forest land; for reforestation; or for improved forest management; and have land that is capable of producing marketable timber crops and meets minimum productivity standards established for FIP. FIP covers up to 65% of the costs of tree planting, timber stand improvements, and related practices on non industrial private  forest lands. There is an annual cost-share payment limit of $10,000 per person. A ten year minimum maintenance agreement is required. There is open enrollment for this program.
