Woodland Incentive Program

General Description
The Woodland Incentive Program (WIP)
provides cost-share and technical assistance to private, non-industrial woodland
owners for managing their woodlands, including forested wetlands. The goals of
this program include enhancement of the environmental, aesthetics, and wildlife
benefits provided by private woodlands and the provision of timber and forest
resource essential to the State's commerce and industry. WIP is sponsored by the
Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) - Forest Service.
Funding and Assistance Availability
WIP pays up to 50%
of eligible practices and is available to owners of at least ten forested acres
but not more than 500 acres that, when appropriate, has the potential to be
harvested for forest products. Funds may not exceed $5,000 per year. These funds
are reimbursable funds made to the landowner after practices have been
completed. Eligible practices include: thinning, pruning, prescribed burning,
crop tree release, site preparation for natural or artificial reforestation,
herbicide treatments, and plantings of seedlings. DNR can also provide
assistance in the development of the forest management plan. There is open
enrollment for this program.
