General Description

The Backyard Wildlife Habitat Program is a project sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). Designed to encourage people to garden for wildlife, the program offers application forms and information kits describing the four basic needs of wildlife: food, water, cover, and a place to raise young. If the habitat is approved the applicant receives a certificate designating the property as an official NWF Backyard Wildlife Habitat site. In 1995, a separate Schoolyard Habitats Program was created to promote the idea of creating school habitat sites as education tools.

Funding and Assistance

The Backyard Wildlife Habitat Program does not provide financial assistance to participants, however technical assistance is available.
