Adkins Arboretum: On a Mission

by Ellie Altman

Adkins Arboretum is dedicated to the appreciation, understanding and stewardship of the indigenous, nontidal plant communities of the Central Delmarva Peninsula. It strives to maintain a diverse and dynamic living collection that is authentic, engaging and a model for land management. The Arboretum reaches beyond its borders to address conservation needs of the Delmarva Peninsula. As a significant cultural, educational, scientific and recreational resource, the Arboretum fosters civic pride, influences public policy and contributes to the economic vitality of the region.

Adjacent to Tuckahoe State Park in Caroline County on the Eastern Shore is a modest facility once heralded as Maryland's State Arboretum,. Envisioned as an interpretive center to display all of the forest communities of Maryland ;with a Western Maryland trial loop. A Central Maryland trail loop and an Eastern Shore trail loop, today the 400-acre facility on the Tuckahoe Creek is promoting what it grows best - the native flora of the Delmarva.

You may be one of the 4.5 million travelers who pass by its entrance each year on their way to the Atlantic Ocean. The Arboretum is two miles north of US 404 just west of Denton, Maryland. The Arboretum facilities are leased from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and operated by the nonprofit Adkins Arboretum, Ltd.
